Plan a Commercial 1

Open Microsoft Project 2007.

If it is not already showing, select View>Turn on Project Guide. Make sure you are in the Ghantt Chart view (View> Gant)

Open a new project File>New (or Ctrl-N) and save it as Commercial

If the task pane is not already displayed, clickTasks on the Project Guide Toolbar

 
In the tasks pane select List the Tasks

List the following tasks in the Task name panel

  1. Pre-Production
  2. Develop script
  3. Develop storyboards
  4. Pick Locations
  5. Hold Auditions
  6. Production
  7. Rehearse
  8. Shoot video
  9. Log footage

Complete the durations as shown

 

An important event such as the end of a phase can be indicated as a milestone

  1. Click the name of task 6 Production
  2. On the insert menu click New Task
  3. Type Pre Production Completed
  4. Enter 0d in the duration field.

 

Organize tasks into phases

  1. Select the names of tasks 2 through 5
  2. Select Tasks>Organize into phases then click on the indent tasks icon
  3. Task 1 becomes a summary task and a summary task bar appears in the Gantt chart.
  4. Now select the names of tasks 8 through 10 and indent them as phases under the Production summary.

 

 

 

You now create task relationships by creating links between tasks. Currently all these tasks start on the same day. We can create links between the tasks in several ways. You can select the Task Drop down and click Schedule tasks. You will see a menu like the example to the left

You can also click the Link Tasks button on the standard toolbar or select Edit>Link Tasks to create this finish-to-start dependancy.

You can unlink tasks by selecting the tasks and click Unlink Tasks on the Standard toolbar or select Edit>Unlink Tasks

  1. In the Task pane, click Schedule Tasks
  2. Select the names of tasks 2 and 3
  3. In the schedule tasks pane, click Finish-to-start Link

The results are below.

 

 

Now select the names of tasks 3 through 6 and link them with a Finish-toStart Link

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Next you will link two tasks in a different way. We are going to make task 8 a predecessor of task 9

  1. Select and double-click the name of task 9
  2. Select the Predecessor tab of the dialog box
  3. Click in the Task Name of the first row and select the down arrow
  4. In the Task Name list click Rehearse and press Enter
  5. Click ok to close the dialog box

 

Select the names of tasks 8, 9 and 10. Link them with a Finish-to-Start Link

 

Finaly, select the name of task 1, and while holding down the CTRL key, select the name of task 7. In the Schedule Tasks pane, make this a Finish-to-start link. This is called a non-adjacent link.
